The Personal Bag Essentials For Long Flights!

What to put in your personal bag to stay sane on a long flight:

Essential 1: noise cancelling headphones

Okay if you only decided to pack one thing on this list it needs to be noise cancelling headphones.

A small space filled with hundreds of people is bound to create a lot of noise. And then when you add all the noises from the plane it’s nearly impossible to actually rest on a flight without noise cancelling headphones. That’s probably dramatic of me to say but seriously we have the technology now to drown out all that noise so don’t waste it!

Essential 2: hand lotion!

Airplanes are one of the driest places you probably spend time so don’t make your poor hands suffer- make sure to bring hand lotion with to keep your skin from feeling like a dessert especially when you land!

However- I do want to say that I always recommend non scented or at least minimally scented lotion so that you aren’t bothering the people around you with strong smells! Remember, a lot of people struggle with strong scents triggering headaches or allergies so it’s better to be safe rather than sorry.

Essential 3: sleeping mask that you actually like

A sleeping mask that’s comfortable and blocks out all light is a lifesaver on long flights, especially if you want to get some rest during daytime travel. Finding one that fits well and doesn’t irritate your face makes it easier to drift off, helping you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed.

Looking for one? Think about ones you have tried before and what you did or didn’t like about them.

For me- my issue was always that I hated my eyelashes hitting the material. So I found this one that has eye cups so there is extra space that keeps your eyelashes from touching things.

Essential 4: pressure helping ear plugs

This one is a recommendation from my husband that SWEARS by EarPlanes. They are special earplugs that help to relieve the pressure. They will keep you from having a miserable flight if you are prone to pressure issues or if it’s a rougher flight. And will help you immediately adjust when you land so no time lost on vacation trying to get your ears to pop back.

Also, if you have smaller ears (think about AirPods, if they don’t fit comfortable this is for you) then try the kids version. I did (no shame!) and they actually fit perfectly!

Essential 5: layering cloths

Cabin temperatures can be unpredictable—one minute it’s chilly, the next it feels stuffy. Layering clothes like a light jacket, scarf, or cardigan allow you to adapt to the changing environment without hassle. Plus, layers can double as extra comfort items, like a makeshift pillow or blanket.

I specifically try to pack a puffy but packable coat that also serves as a comfy pillow and it works like a charm!

Essential 6: hand sanitizer

Airplanes are shared spaces, and germs are everywhere. A travel-sized hand sanitizer ensures you can clean your hands before eating, after using the bathroom, or just whenever you feel the need. Look for one with moisturizing properties to combat the drying effects of alcohol-based formulas.

Also, on the same note it’s helpful to bring sanitizing wipes to wipe down your chair, tray table, and most importantly anything in the bathroom you may end up touching!

Essential 7: tooth brush + paste

Freshening up during a long flight can do wonders for your mood and energy levels. Brushing your teeth mid-flight or before landing helps you feel more refreshed and ready to tackle your destination, even if you’ve been in the air for hours.

Essential 8: medications!

If you have any medications you take regularly, keep them in your personal bag for easy access. It’s also a good idea to pack a few extras, like motion sickness tablets, pain relievers, or antihistamines, just in case. Having these on hand can save you a lot of discomfort because who knows what can happen on a long haul flight!

And you don’t want to risk important medicine getting lost if the bag is being handled by a bunch of people in different locations.

Essential 9: device chargers + power bank

Your in-flight entertainment or productivity relies heavily on your devices staying charged. Keep your chargers and a power bank handy so you’re not left with a dead phone or tablet halfway through the flight. Many planes now offer USB outlets, but it’s always better to have a backup and not risk hours without entertainment- plus that’s like a guarantee you’ll be seated next to someone who doesn’t get the hint to leave you alone.

Essential 10: hair ties

Hair ties might seem like a small item, but they’re a big deal for anyone with long hair. Whether it’s to keep your hair out of your face while sleeping or freshen up before landing, a simple hair tie can save you from frustration.

Essential 11: nutrient rich snacks

Airplane food isn’t always satisfying or healthy, and long flights can leave you feeling hungry between meals. Pack nutrient-rich snacks like nuts, dried fruit, or protein bars to keep your energy levels up and your hunger in check. I know I’m not the only one who gets extra hangry while traveling!

Essential 12: change of clothes

Having a fresh outfit to change into can be a game-changer on a long flight. Whether it’s for an unexpected spill, to freshen up before landing, or to stay comfortable during an overnight journey, a change of clothes ensures you’re prepared for anything.

Essential 13: reusable water bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial during flights, as the cabin air can dehydrate you quickly. Bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up after passing through security. Most airlines provide water during the flight, but having your own ensures you can sip whenever you need.

Also, you may be able to find a restaurant that lets you fill it up with ice so you can have cold drinks the whole flight!

Essential 14: small entertainment tablet/ e-reader

While many airlines offer in-flight entertainment, having your own device loaded with your favorite books, shows, or games ensures you’ll never be bored. Tablets or e-readers are lightweight and compact, making them perfect for long-haul flights without taking up too much space.
