Essential Tips For Avoiding Tourist Traps
How to do your best to avoid tourist traps:
1. Do Your Research
Before you even pack your bags, do a little homework.
Check out travel blogs, forums, and local websites to find out which spots are genuinely worth your time. I always look for recommendations from locals or seasoned travelers—they tend to know the hidden gems and the overrated tourist traps.
I don’t recommend swearing by tourist reviews of restaurants as your own experiences will determine your enjoyment of a restaurant. However, I do advise checking the stars because a tourist trap will generally have terrible reviews, like under 3 stars on Google. The exception is if it is newer and doesn’t have very many reviews. Which also should generally be a sign if a restaurant is in a high value place with minimal reviews that it should be approached with caution.
2. Avoid Peak Hours
Tourist traps are like magnets for crowds, especially during peak hours. I try to visit popular attractions early in the morning or later in the evening when the crowds have thinned out. Trust me, you’ll enjoy the experience so much more without the throngs of people.
Also, research the time of meal for locals where you are going. For example, in most of southern Europe the locals tend to eat dinner after 9pm at night. And the best restaurants tend to adjust for that and don’t even open for dinner until later. Usually after 7pm!
So if a restaurant is open say for example, from 5-10pm for dinner (standard in America) it is definitely a restaurant focused on getting international travelers. That doesn’t guarantee it’s a tourist trap but it is so much more likely to be one so keep that in mind when picking places!
3. Skip the Obvious Restaurants
Those restaurants right next to major attractions? Yeah, avoid them like the plague. They’re usually overpriced and underwhelming. Instead, wander a few blocks away and look for places where the locals eat. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also get a taste of authentic cuisine.
My best advice is to try to take at least one “turn” off the main road!
4. Ask the Locals
Speaking of locals, don’t be shy—ask them for recommendations! Whether it’s your Airbnb host, a friendly barista, or someone you strike up a conversation with, locals can point you towards the best spots that aren’t swarming with tourists. Plus, they might share some insider tips that you won’t find in any guidebook.
Personally I love when people visit the US and ask for recommendations (I used to work front desk at hotels and it was the highlight of my day to give recs). And have found when traveling that most people share the love of sharing their favorite local places. So don’t be shy and just try asking!
5. Use Public Transportation
Instead of hopping on those hop-on-hop-off buses or pricey tourist shuttles, use public transportation. It’s cheaper, and you’ll get a more authentic feel for the place. Plus, you might discover some cool spots along the way that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
I also find that you waste so much less time when using public transit compared to private transportation so really it is a win-win.
6. Look Beyond the Main Attractions
Sure, the Eiffel Tower is iconic, but Paris has so much more to offer. I love exploring lesser-known neighborhoods, parks, and museums. These places are often less crowded and provide a more genuine experience of the city’s culture and charm.
For example, in Athens I noticed that a full and beautiful view of the acropolis had way too high of rent for most local businesses. Which resulted in a lot of the “amazing views” being foreign investment run restaurants. And a partial or further view, or no view at all meant less tourist traps and more authentic and better food.
My hack is to go to those places with the insane view for one drink (and be prepared to pay triple what you do everywhere else in the city) and soak in the view before going to enjoy some much better and less tourist trap food.
7. Be Wary of “Must-See” Lists
While “must-see” lists can be helpful, they often include places that are overrun with tourists. Use them as a starting point but don’t be afraid to veer off the beaten path. Some of my favorite travel memories come from unplanned detours and spontaneous discoveries.
8. Trust Your Instincts
If something feels too touristy, it probably is. Trust your gut and don’t be afraid to walk away. Whether it’s a souvenir shop that all looks the same or a street performer with a crowd of hundreds, sometimes it’s best to move along and find something more unique.
This is hard to quantify into advice but trust me, if something feels a little too sterile or overpacked it very likely could be a tourist trap.
9. Plan Ahead but Stay Flexible
I like to have a rough itinerary but leave room for spontaneity. That way, I can avoid the major tourist traps while still having the freedom to explore. Sometimes the best experiences happen when you least expect them.
10. Use Social Media Wisely
Instagram can be both a blessing and a curse. While it’s great for inspiration, those picture-perfect spots are often packed with tourists. Instead, search for hashtags or geotags that are less popular to find hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to having a more authentic and enjoyable travel experience. Say goodbye to tourist traps and hello to discovering the real heart of your destination. Happy travels!
