Crucial Tips For Packing Light On A 2 Week Trip
How to pack lighter for a long trip:
1. Create a Packing List
Start with a solid plan. Make a detailed list of everything you think you’ll need, then cut it in half. Seriously, you don’t need seven pairs of shoes or a different outfit for every day. Focus on versatile pieces that you can mix and match.
I find it best to make first a detailed itinerary- knowing exactly what you will be doing every day makes it so much easier to pack. When you are guessing on what days might hold you end up over packing clothes that never end up being worn!
2. Choose Versatile Clothing
Speaking of versatility, pick clothes that can be dressed up or down. Think neutral colors (or your go to colors! For me it’s blue and green) and simple pieces. A plain dress, a pair of jeans, and some comfy t-shirts can go a long way. Layering is your friend—pack a light sweater or jacket that can be thrown over any outfit.
3. Limit Your Shoes
Shoes take up a lot of space, so be ruthless. Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes, a pair of nicer shoes for evenings out, and maybe some sandals if you’re headed somewhere warm. Wear the bulkiest pair on the plane to save space in your bag.
If you are headed to Europe leave the heels!! I just bring one pair of sneakers that are nice-ish that can be worn to dinner (sneakers at dinner is super normal in most European countries!) and a pair of comfy walking sandals.
4. Roll, Don’t Fold
Rolling your clothes not only saves space but also helps prevent wrinkles. Roll everything tightly and you’ll be amazed at how much more you can fit into your suitcase. Plus, it’s like playing Tetris with your clothes—super satisfying!
I also have found that when packing as light as possible packing cubes actually just get in the way and take up space but when you aren’t really limiting your luggage I do love them (like for a resort or cruise!).
5. Pack Travel-Sized Toiletries
Don’t bring full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner. Invest in travel-sized containers or buy toiletries when you arrive at your destination. Trust me, you won’t miss those extra ounces, and your back will thank you.
6. Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are a game-changer. They help keep your suitcase organized and make it easy to find what you need without unpacking everything. Plus, they compress your clothes, giving you more space for souvenirs!
7. Wear Your Bulkiest Items
This is my go-to trick. Wear your heaviest clothes and shoes on the plane. That means your coat, boots, and even that chunky sweater you love. Airplane cabins can be chilly, so you’ll be cozy and saving space at the same time.
You can also use the jackets or sweaters as a blanket on the plane or roll them up as a pillow.
8. Stick to a Color Scheme
Choose a color palette so all your clothes can be mixed and matched. This way, you can create multiple outfits with just a few pieces. It’s like having a capsule wardrobe on the go.
9. Do Laundry on the Road
Pack enough clothes for a week and plan to do laundry halfway through your trip. Most hotels have laundry services, or you can find a local laundromat. It’s a small inconvenience for the freedom of traveling light.
10. Leave Room for Souvenirs
Remember to leave a little space in your suitcase for souvenirs and goodies you pick up along the way. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself when you don’t have to wrestle with your bag at the end of your trip.
11. Utilize Your Personal Item
Airlines usually allow a carry-on and a personal item. Use a backpack or a large tote bag as your personal item to carry essentials like your passport, wallet, phone, and a change of clothes.
12. Plan for the Weather
Check the weather forecast for your destination and pack accordingly. There’s no need to bring a raincoat if it’s the dry season, and you definitely don’t need a heavy jacket for a tropical climate. Be smart and pack what you need for the weather.
13. Minimize Accessories
Keep accessories to a minimum. A couple of pairs of earrings, a necklace, and a scarf can add flair to your outfits without taking up much space. Leave the bulky jewelry and multiple bags at home.
14. Go Digital
Instead of carrying books, maps, and guidebooks, download everything onto your phone or e-reader. It saves space and weight, and you’ll have everything you need right at your fingertips.
15. Reevaluate Before You Leave
Before you zip up your suitcase, take a final look at what you’ve packed and ask yourself if you really need each item. If you’re unsure about something, chances are you can leave it behind.
Packing light for a two-week trip doesn’t have to be stressful. With these tips, you’ll be able to streamline your packing process and enjoy your travels without the burden of heavy luggage. Happy travels, and may your suitcase be light and your adventures plentiful!
