7 Things To Prepare For Before a Road Trip

How to prep for a long road trip:

1. Vehicle Maintenance

  • Check-Up: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition by scheduling a maintenance check-up. Check the oil, brakes, tires, lights, and fluid levels. Not sure how to do those things? Me either, if no one in your family can then seriously consider bringing the car you are taking on your road trip to a mechanic please!
  • Spare Tire and Tools: Make sure you have a spare tire, jack, and necessary tools in case of a flat tire. It’s also a good idea to have jumper cables and a basic toolkit. Depending on the weather I also recommend bringing snow chains in case you need them for your tires.

2. Route Planning

  • Map Out Your Route: Plan your route in advance using GPS or a map. Identify rest stops, gas stations, and places of interest along the way. As a vegetarian I like to pre-spot for veggie friendly fast food (aka Burger King and Taco Bell) so that it’s not frantic to find them when you’re the passenger.
  • Backup Routes: Have alternative routes planned in case of road closures or heavy traffic. Also, I recommend using Waze because it will alert and re route you if there is an accident or anything causing traffic to back up. That being said, I also recommend always listening to the GPS. Guys, none of us are smarter than the computer when it comes to routing!

3. Emergency Kit

  • First Aid Kit: Pack a first aid kit with bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and any personal medications. Always bring some extras of any prescription medication on any trip you go on so that if you get delayed or the trip gets extended you are all set.
  • Emergency Supplies: Include items like a flashlight, batteries, blanket, non-perishable snacks, bottled water, and a multi-tool.

4. Entertainment and Comfort

  • Music and Audiobooks: Create playlists or download audiobooks and podcasts to keep everyone entertained during the drive.
  • Comfort Items: Bring travel pillows, blankets, and comfortable clothing to make long drives more pleasant.

5. Snacks and Drinks

  • Healthy Snacks: Pack a variety of snacks like fruit, nuts, granola bars, and sandwiches to keep hunger at bay. My biggest tip with this is make sure not to bring things that will melt if it is hot outside when the car is off.
  • Hydration: Bring plenty of water and drinks to stay hydrated throughout the trip. I’m a big fan of filtering water bottles where they filter the water for you so you don’t have to worry much about different water sources.

6. Navigation and Communication

  • GPS and Maps: Ensure your GPS device or smartphone is updated with the latest maps. Keep a physical map as a backup. It sounds old school but once you lose all signal in the middle of rural South Dakota (yep speaking from experience) you will be thankful you have an old school physical map in your car.
  • Chargers and Power Banks: Bring chargers and power banks to keep your devices powered, especially for navigation and communication.

7. Accommodation and Reservations

  • Book in Advance: If you plan to stay overnight, book accommodations in advance to avoid last-minute hassles. I’m a big fan of committing to one hotel chain for the road trip to rack up as many points as possible! They also tend not to be fancy but more reliable for check in times and room quality which is key when you are traveling and don’t want to deal with unplanned issues after driving all day.
  • Campgrounds: If you’re camping, make sure you have all necessary camping gear and confirm reservations at campgrounds.

By preparing these essential items and plans before your road trip, you’ll be ready to hit the road with confidence and enjoy a memorable journey. Safe travels!
