14 Questions To Ask Yourself When Decluttering Clothing

Ask these questions while doing a closet declutter:

  1. Do I Love It? – Does this item bring you joy, make you feel confident, and evoke positive feelings when you wear it?
  2. Have I Worn It in the Last Year? – If you haven’t worn it in the past year, consider whether you’re likely to wear it again in the future.
  3. Does It Fit Me Well? – Clothes that no longer fit properly can be uncomfortable and don’t do justice to your body.
  4. Is It in Good Condition? – Check for signs of wear, damage, or stains. If it’s damaged beyond repair or in poor condition, it may be time to say goodbye.
  5. Does It Match My Current Style? – Our fashion tastes evolve over time. Make sure your wardrobe reflects your current style preferences.
  6. Is It a Duplicate? – Do you have multiple similar items? Keeping duplicates can lead to a cluttered wardrobe.
  7. Does It Serve a Specific Purpose? – Some clothes are only suitable for specific occasions. Evaluate whether you have enough opportunities to wear these items.
  8. Is It Seasonally Appropriate? – If it’s a seasonal item and the season has passed, consider storing it until it’s in season again.
  9. Is It Comfortable? – Uncomfortable clothes are unlikely to get much wear. Prioritize comfort when decluttering.
  10. Is It Part of My Core Wardrobe? – Core wardrobe pieces are versatile and can be mixed and matched easily. Focus on keeping these essentials.
  11. Does It Have Sentimental Value? – Sentimental items can be challenging to part with. Consider whether the sentimental value outweighs the practicality of keeping it.
  12. Is It Out of Style? – Fashion trends come and go. If the item is outdated and unlikely to come back in style, it may be time to bid it farewell.
  13. Will I Realistically Alter It? – If an item needs significant alterations to fit or look better, ask yourself if you’re committed to making those changes.
  14. Can Someone Else Benefit from It More? – Consider donating or selling clothes that you no longer need but are still in good condition.

These questions can guide you through the decluttering process, helping you create a wardrobe that’s more functional, organized, and aligned with your current lifestyle and style preferences.

I also wanted to share a couple of additional tips for decluttering clothes!

Helpful tips for clothing decluttering:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Before you start, define your decluttering goals. Are you looking to create more space, simplify your wardrobe, or update your style? Having clear objectives will guide your decisions.
  2. Take Everything Out: Empty your entire wardrobe, including drawers and storage bins. Lay everything out in a visible and accessible space so you can see the full extent of your clothing collection.
  3. Categorize Items: Sort your clothes into categories like tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and accessories. This organization will make it easier to evaluate each category separately.
  4. Use the KonMari Method: Follow Marie Kondo’s advice by holding each item and asking, “Does it spark joy?” If an item doesn’t bring you joy or serve a practical purpose, consider letting it go.
  5. One at a Time: Go through your clothes one piece at a time. Avoid the temptation to rush through the process. Give each item thoughtful consideration.
  6. Set Limits: Determine the number of items you want to keep in each category. For example, decide to keep only five pairs of jeans or ten sweaters. Setting limits can prevent overaccumulation.
  7. Consider the Season: Focus on decluttering items that are currently in season. Off-season clothing can be stored separately until needed.
  8. Evaluate Fit: Try on items to assess their fit. Clothes that no longer fit properly or comfortably should be considered for removal from your wardrobe.
  9. Check for Damage: Examine each item for signs of wear, damage, or stains. Be honest about whether you’re likely to repair or wear items that are damaged.
  10. Donate or Sell: Create separate piles for items to donate, sell, or discard. Consider hosting a garage sale or using online platforms to sell gently-used clothing.
  11. Rotate Seasonal Items: If you have limited storage space, consider rotating seasonal clothing. Store off-season items in bins or under-the-bed storage until they’re needed.
  12. Keep Versatile Pieces: Prioritize versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched easily with the rest of your wardrobe.
  13. Learn from Past Mistakes: Reflect on clothing purchases you regret. Use these insights to make more mindful shopping choices in the future.
  14. Maintenance Is Key: After decluttering, maintain your wardrobe regularly. Conduct seasonal reviews to ensure your wardrobe stays organized and clutter-free.
  15. Practice the One In, One Out Rule: For every new clothing item you acquire, consider donating or discarding an old one. This rule helps prevent future clutter.
